St. Peter-Ording already has a lot to offer, but there are also a few nice excursions that we can recommend to you.
Probably the town's most famous son is the German poet Theodor Storm. In his poem "The Town", he once described Husum as grey and dreary. Today, however, the district town is quite colourful. Especially in the spring months, Husum's castle park shines in beautiful shades of purple: over 4 million crocuses make the castle park glow.
Husum is considered the cultural and economic centre of North Friesland. Beautiful buildings, the cosy harbour, the picturesque castle and other sights such as the Theodor Storm Centre invite you to linger.
The gastronomy also leaves nothing to be desired. In addition to cosy cafés and quaint pubs, there are numerous restaurants. From regional to Italian cuisine, everyone will find a place to enjoy themselves here.
By the way: from spring to autumn, you can explore the harbour on a great harbour tour. Or simply stop by and enjoy a fish sandwich straight from the cutter!
The small Dutch town on the Treene is an absolute crowd-puller. Built in 1621 by Dutch religious refugees, "Little Amsterdam", as the town is affectionately known, has long ceased to be an insider tip. Year after year, more and more visitors come to the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein to be enchanted by the historic town. The climatic health resort is characterised by its impressive gabled houses, the countless bridges and canals that criss-cross the lively old town.
Small cafés, galleries and manufactories invite you to linger and browse in the small Dutch town. While some explore the city centre, others linger under a weeping willow on the banks of a canal. Peace and relaxation make it easy to forget the time.
Our tip: Friedrichstadt is best explored on the water. Whether by canoe, e-boat, stand-up paddling or on a canal cruise. With a Friedrichstädter Donker, a North German cellar beer, you can definitely hold out.
Fancy a trip to the small Dutch town on our North Sea coast? No problem! Friedrichstadt is very easy to reach from St. Peter Ording. Whether by bike, car or train - we will be happy to answer any questions you may have about travelling to Friedrichstadt.
It's nice around Tönning too! At least we think so, because the unspoilt natural landscape and well-maintained cycle and hiking trails invite you to go on extensive discovery tours. On the water or over land, there is something to discover everywhere. And if you fancy a short break, there are all kinds of small cafés that invite you to stop for a cool lemonade.
It's also worth taking a short stroll through the beautiful harbour town. Tönning is known for its alleyways with gabled houses that lead around the lively town centre to the small harbour. If you haven't already been there... because at Christmas time you will find the longest Advent calendar in the world - the Packhaus.
And if you have your kids with you and the North Sea sun is shining, you should make a detour to the heated outdoor pool, which is located directly on the beach.
And don't forget the Multimar Wattforum: The interactive exhibition on mudflats, whales and the World Heritage Site is unique. Numerous aquariums offer great, vivid insights into the natural phenomenon of the Wadden Sea.
Another highlight on our North Sea coast is Germany's largest coastal defence structure. The construction of the imposing barrage was ultimately triggered by the severe storm surge in 1962, which caused massive damage in the country. The Eidersperrwerk was built between 1967 and 1973 and still provides its loyal service today. Many visitors come every day to marvel at the gigantic structure.
In good weather, the route to the Eidersperrwerk is a real highlight. You can cycle 23 kilometres along the dyke to the barrage. Otherwise, it's a good fifteen minutes by car from the Beach Motel SPO.
A visit is possible at any time and free parking is available.
From May to September, the Wesselburen Tourist Association offers free guided tours of the Eidersperrwerk on a voluntary basis.
Our tip: You can also view the Eidersperrwerk from a boat. Twice a day, the Adler 2 sails along the Eider to the Eidersperrwerk, where a lock is opened. And if you look carefully, you might spot some sea creatures!
The Westküstenpark zoo in St. Peter-Ording is one of the largest zoos in Schleswig-Holstein. There is plenty to marvel at here, especially for kids. Here you can see many North Sea coastal inhabitants up close and even pet them if you like. The big seal show is a highlight of every visit. This is because seals are fed twice a day during special demonstrations in Germany's largest seal enclosure filled with North Sea water. There are also commentated feedings of pets and wild animals.
Is that not enough for you? Then you can also take part in the feedings of other zoo inhabitants. Both our young and older guests can learn and experience a lot here.
And once you've had your fill of the animals, you can let off steam in the huge children's playground with sandpits, swings and slides - and lots of like-minded people.
Have you always wanted to know exactly how the Wadden Sea works? You can get the answer to this question with a visit to the Multimar Wattforum in Töning. It's also perfect for an excursion on a rainy day. Ideally with the whole group.
Because in the interesting and interactive exhibition, young and old can learn a whole lot - and discover many different facts about the Wadden Sea. The World Heritage Site is an exciting natural phenomenon that is presented in a clear and understandable way in this exhibition. For example, the question of how the crab gets into the bread roll is answered. The 37 different aquariums are also very interesting. They house a total of 280 animal species, all of which come from habitats around the Wadden Sea. Outside, there is also a great, varied children's playground where your little ones can really let off steam. And if the whole family needs a bite to eat afterwards, you are very welcome in the Multimar restaurant!
Would you like to combine a holiday with horse riding? Then explore the beach of St. Peter-Ording on horseback! Horse riding excursions on the beach are possible between the districts of Dorf and Böhl - and an experience you won't forget in a hurry. After all, the beach can be explored in a completely different way on horseback.
Do you want to ride with your friends on the beach at SPO and create great memories? Then get a riding badge now. You can get one all year round at the tourist information centre and from May to October from the staff at the beach crossings.
Practical: there are three different riding centres in St. Peter-Ording that offer excursions. For advanced riders and beginners, for adults and children. Further information about horse riding in SPO can be found HERE.
Home-made tastes best of all! If you feel the same way, you're sure to love the Landladen Kühl. It sells great regional products, some of which are organic. These include things like delicious homemade jam, tasty cheese and yoghurt, sausage, vegetables and eggs from their own hens. However, the shop is famous for its delicious cherries and strawberries. These are home-grown and are very popular even beyond the borders of Eiderstedt.
The well-stocked shop is located in a quaint old Haubarg (an original Eiderstedt Frisian house with a large thatched roof) and offers not only culinary delights but also beautiful flowers, perennials and even Danish-style decorative items. And while you shop in peace and quiet or enjoy a cosy cup of coffee, your kids will love the huge corn maze in summer. Your children will be kept busy for a long time, as there are all kinds of creatures waiting to be discovered in the large maze. Of course, that doesn't mean that older visitors can't have fun in the maze too.
A farm shop with guaranteed enjoyment and fun!
The Frisian sheep cheese dairy in Tetenbüll is always worth a visit! On the Volquardsen family's rustic farm, you can not only buy delicious cheese, but also learn all kinds of interesting facts about East Frisian dairy sheep. Incidentally, they romp around idyllically on the green meadows of the cheese dairy - and are always happy to have a good scratching session.
But be careful: don't catch the goat, otherwise the smell will haunt you for some time to come!
